During my time at Mudtools, I gained valuable insight into running an art-related business. My primary role involved working in the "spongeon" (sponge dungeon), meticulously sanding and shaping sponge tools into precise, jelly-bean-like forms. Every small imperfection had to be carefully smoothed away, which taught me about the high standards required for quality craftsmanship.Beyond this, I learned about machinery design from Avery Sherrill, who engineered a custom machine using advanced 3D software to streamline sponge production. It was fascinating to see how technology could enhance productivity in an art-focused business. The process of transforming a digital concept into a physical machine blew my mind. It demonstrated the ingenuity and innovation behind the scenes, showing me how art and technology seamlessly blend to enhance productivity and expand the potential of a creative business.One of the most unforgettable aspects of my internship was the opportunity to spend time with Michael Sherrill, a renowned pottery and sculpture artist. Michael’s mastery in his craft was truly inspiring. He introduced me to the pottery wheel and the art of throwing clay. Initially, the wheel felt foreign to me, and working with clay presented its own challenges, but with Michael’s guidance, I began to understand the delicate balance between control and fluidity required to shape the clay.My internship at Mudtools was an incredible opportunity to explore the intersection of art, craftsmanship, and business. I’m grateful for the time I spent there, and I carry with me the lessons learned—from the meticulousness of shaping sponges to the innovation of machinery design and the hands-on experience of working with clay. This experience deepened my appreciation for the hard work and creativity that go into running a successful art-based business, and it has inspired me to pursue my own artistic endeavors with the same passion and precision.
