Animal Caretaker
Fowler, Indiana, United States
As an animal caretaker at Martin Family Farms, I fulfilled a wide variety of duties within various areas of the swine farming industry. These included departments such as farrowing, gestation, breeding, guilt-developing, isolation, and nursery. My responsibilities included independently identifying and treating sows or piglets with injuries or sicknesses, pulling piglets from farrowing sows, castrating and tail-docking piglets, humanely euthanizing pigs with a low quality of life, regularly monitoring the body condition and feed intake of sows, performing heat and pregnancy checks on sows, and artificially inseminating sows using both traditional and post-cervical methods. I also assisted in a research study by Veterinary Pharmaceutical Solutions observing the effects of different medications on shoulder sores in sows. Additionally, this position included frequently communicating with coworkers in Spanish.
