One of the State of Florida's sea turtle stranding and salvage network biologists. Responsible for answering calls that come in regarding sick, injured, and/or deceased sea turtles that have been reported statewide via the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline. It is my responsibility to collect as many details regarding the stranded sea turtle as possible and relay that information effectively to local Permit holders in order to coordinate the proper response needed for that particular stranded turtle. Additional duties include selecting turtles to salvage for necropsies, and inputting stranding reports into the sea turtle stranding and salvage network database. The other half of my duties involves helping out with sea turtle nesting research. My main focus being the new FWRI Primary Sex Ratio research project where I am to pick up nest content samples from permit holders and process the samples for proper genetic sampling to carry out the primary sex ratio study.

Employed as a Field Technician to help contribute to a long-term data collection on one of the highest density sea turtle nesting beaches in the United States by conducting early morning surveys across 9.5 miles of beach via ATV. As the lead technician I was responsible for instructing an intern under my lead, recording crawls via Trimble GPS, marking and excavating nests, releasing hatchlings, assisting with strandings, educating the public, entering and verifying data, ensuring atvs are equipped, clean, and maintained, attending bi-weekly team meetings, and working closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. All work was done under the Marine Turtle Permit.

Performed the day to day duties of a keeper at a non-profit chelonian conservation center that has over six hundred turtles and tortoises, representing twenty five percent of the world’s critically endangered species. My duties included, proper handling and restraint of turtles and tortoises, animal husbandry, food preparation, water changes, cleaning/sanitizing habitats, grounds keeping, pit tagging, fecal/scale sample collecting, record keeping, attending and educating guests at outreach events, basic animal medical treatments including giving fluids and injections, candling, incubating, and processing eggs, and more.

Worked with Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Conservation Department to host educational outreach programs to inform the public about LMC’s eco-conscious efforts. I introduced the public to the different ways of reducing the amount of waste created by switching to more sustainable alternatives. I also worked closely with the Conservation Coordinator to sort through hundreds of pounds of trash that was collected off the local beaches during monthly beach clean ups.
