I served the Office of Assemblyman Luis A. Alejo as his Assembly Fellow for the 2014-2015 legislative session. There I was able to provide legislative support to constituents of the 30th District, Salinas/Monterrey, and assisted the California Latino Legislative Caucus under his leadership.Some of my issue areas involved K-12 Education, Higher Education, Immigration, and Housing; as well as legislative issues assigned to the Assembly Committee of Governmental Organization focusing on alcohol, Indian gaming, horseracing, gambling, tobacco, outdoor advertising, and emergency services/natural disasters.Specifically, I was able to assist the Member in passing legislation such as Assembly Bill 215, signed by Governor Jerry Brown, which capped a school's superintendent's severance pay to a maximum of 12 months and eliminated pay to those who engaged in illegal fiscal activity. I also assisted in the effort to advance an Ethnic Studies Curriculum in CA High Schools (AB 101) and assisted in the effort to increase competitive Cal Grants (AB 200) to increase college affordability which was later supported in an increase in the CA State Budget 2015-16.

The California State Assembly Fellowship Program, founded in 1957, is one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious legislative fellowship programs. In 1987, the program was renamed the Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship Program to honor California's former Assembly Speaker and State Treasurer. This unique program provides an opportunity for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to directly participate in the legislative process. Each year, 18 individuals are selected to participate in the program. The 11-month fellowship provides an introduction to public policy formation and adoption in the California Legislature through full-time work as a professional legislative staff member

As a translator I served District Attorney lawyers and investigators with vital information for the prosecution of various inmates. By sorting through a large database of prison-inmate voice calls, I was able to assess information that would serve as evidence and recognized calling patterns or code names for topics pertaining to their case that attorneys found useful. Access to this information was maintained by an online database in which I made accessible pertinent information such as the description of the call, highlighted evidence, and the caller information.

During my time as Supervisor Carbajal’s office assistant I enhanced his social media branch to offer community members a more personalized interaction with the Supervisor and his goals. One such goal was the success of the Family Health and Resource Fair in which I worked with staff and other Santa Barbara public offices and organizations to proved residents with access to healthcare through enrollment and awareness of vital health information to lower-income residents through social media and workshops to implement daily health tips at home, school, and the community.

As a leader of the managerial team for the Office Records Manager, I implemented an efficient system to maintain and keep accessible all student files. Utilizing the ISIS data entry for student appointments, the creation of new files, and purging of graduate files advisors were able to keep up-to-date of their students needs and able to aide them in their goal of gradating within four years.

The University of California Washington Program (UCDC) provides UCSB students with a unique opportunity to live and work as interns and conduct research in our nation’s political and cultural epicenter, Washington DC. As a member of this program during the Fall of 2013, I worked with the Congressional Management Foundation and participated in the undergraduate Presidency Seminar. I conducted research on the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administration to analyze the success and failures in their attempts against human sex trafficking on an international and domestic level. Not only did I gain academic and professional experience during my time in D.C. I also had several opportunities to network with UC Alumni living in the D.C. area and through the program was able to volunteer at the Capitol during key events such as the California House and Senate annual Christmas Party and White House Tree Lighting Ceremony. The UCDC program provides students with an opportunity unlike any other in that it targets career and professional preparation to accompany academia.

The Congressional Management Foundation is a non-profit non-partisan organization that is geared towards enhancing communication between representatives and constituents. I was part of the evaluation team for the 2013 Gold Mouse Awards which recognizes House and Senate members who have used social media and their websites as a tool to communicate with constituents's going above and beyond what is expected. These awards essentially raise the bar representatives are expected to meet, improving transparency for future generations. On a daily basis I would create the “Daily Digest” for all staff members, which is a collection of that days most pressing news and any Congressional activity that we need to be aware of to better serve our members. Individually I worked with each staff member on different projects. I was the Sales Force programer in the office, receiving all information on current and new benefactors to enter into our data system so that they would be able to receive the benefits of contributing to CMF such as receiving publications, program invitations, and program memos. I assisted the Office Manager in preparing all materials for the programs/events created by CMF to aid the internal functions of House and Senate staffers, such as “Managing Your Email Monster” to improve the office’s output on a daily basis. For members who were not able to attend a CMF program, I wrote the program memo which is sent out to CMF donors and board members 24 hours after an event. As a research assistant I also worked on smaller projects for staff members, for example I created an information listing of a candidate who was being considered for the Gold Mouse Social Media Panel providing the Gold Mouse leader and President of CMF with all of the candidates qualifications and work history. Working for the Congressional Management Foundation provided me with invaluable work experience and preparation for future endeavors.

I served as a civil servant to the City of Chino Hills in the recreation department. My duties were to communicate directly with Chino Hills residents, keeping them informed of all City events, services, and updates. I was to be well informed of the city’s departments and offices (City Council, Police dept., Fire dept., etc). As a Recreation Leader, I used the City’s recreation software to enlist residents into their desired recreation program. These programs are offered to local residents each season ranging from Pee-Wee sports to Community Watch Teams to Senior Citizen Computer classes. All Recreation Leaders are responsible for being informed and up to date on all the programs we offer and how to assist each individual into the appropriate one for their age and skill level. Residents would contact us personally by coming to our local offices and calling the community site. Recreation Leaders are also in charge of preparing their sites rooms for each community event, working as a team to set-up chairs and tables. We also served to book community centers for personal and corporate use, creating the desired atmosphere requested by that resident the day of their event. Working as a Recreation Leader was my first step into public service and management preparing me for my future aspirations.
