I am a soon to be Recreational Therapy graduate from Temple University with a focus on adapted sports and adapted physical activity. I have 8+ years of experience as a primary caregiver, 10+ years running after school physical activities for my neighborhood kids and 5 years of coaching a variety of sports (primarily baseball/softball). I decided to become a Recreational therapist with a focus on adapted sports and adapted physical activity after volunteering with Magee Rehabilitation during their wheelchair rugby tournament and with Carousel House in Philadelphia as I realized the true power of sports, adapted or not. As a former 3 sport athlete, engaging in sports provided me an escape from the challenges of being a young caregiver and allowed me to be a kid, a kid with only kid responsibilities. It allowed me to have fun and gain social, physical, and emotional benefits without realizing it. I strive to be able to give any person the same feelings that I felt playing baseball. The feeling of pure fun and happiness. For some, sports are a hobby, for others, sports are an activity, for me it’s an obsession. I want people of all ages and abilities to be able to experience love. Love is at the heart of all sports. It is the reason why I want to become a recreational therapist with a focus on adapted sports. I believe that sports can create positive values and enhance lives. Through sports, we learn about teamwork, the importance of being a good sport and fairness. We not only feel love, but sports have a unique ability to provide an escape from everyday challenges. I want to be able to take my love of sports and create a place where athletes of all abilities can come and show their talents and where people of all ages and abilities have a safe place to have fun while engaging in meaningful physical activity that can build confidence and create lifelong benefits.
