International English Minga Program Coordinator And Co-FounderThe Pachamama Alliance Jan 2012 - Aug 2012EcuadorProgram implemented in Summer 2012 with the Achuar Nation of Ecuadorian Amazon. Minga is a Quechua word used by people in the Amazon and Andes to describe a community work party in which a difficult task is completed for the good of the community. The Achuar are applying this concept to the field of education for the first time. Partnering with the University of San Francisco’s Department of International and Multicultural Education, teacher training strategies and a basic ESL curriculum were co-created, centering on the traditional knowledge, lifestyle and the goals of the Achuar: primarily supporting development of ecotourism as an alternative to extractive industry presence in their territory. USF teachers and students brought home their experience from the Amazon, inspired by the concept of minga, and created educational initiatives to integrate creative & collaborative, solutions-based & community-oriented thinking into their classrooms and communities. Raised over $10,000 in-kind donations for this project and $15,000 in grants. -
