My previous research highlights the importance of environmental adaptation and metabolic plasticity as being key cellular variables that require much further investigation to better understand the use of microenvironment-specific and/or cell type-specific targets therapeutically. Therefore, I plan to further investigate environmental adaptation and metabolic plasticity in the context of autoimmune disease and cancer, aiming to 1) discover environmental adaptation strategies used by pathogenic immune cells for adapting to autoimmune microenvironments, and to 2) understand how cellular metabolism is differentially organized in, and regulates activities of, cancer cells and tumor-infiltrating T cells. These studies may lead to 1) innovative approaches to suppress immune responses, specifically in the inflamed tissues for autoimmune therapy, and to 2) combine metabolic targeting with immunotherapy to achieve superior anti-tumor efficacy.
