UNU-INWEH is the United Nations' think tank on water. I worked at the intersection of water, climate and health policy and practice. My research interests included: - climate adaptation as part of Behavioural Adaptation for Water Security and Inclusion (BASIN) project funded by IDRC-FCDO Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) programme; - water security, basic service provision and governance;- policymaking and implementation science, including gender-transformative programming; and - emerging topics such as planetary health, climate science, WASH system strengthening activities in health facilities and effective management of environmentally persistent pharmaceutical pollutants (EPPPs).

EC Marie Sklodowska-Curie research fellowship on implementation of urban sanitation servicing models. Developed a two-week behaviour science-focused module (Behaviour Change & Advocacy) & a computer-assisted qualitative data analysis workshop for a new 12-month M.Sc. in Sanitation funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

Worked with a network of health providers & NGO partners to improve adolescent psychosocial care policies & paediatric treatment in 24 Sub-Saharan African countries. Published 1 research paper & 1 opinion piece with experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) & the University of Oxford advocating for increased youth psychosocial support to improve treatment adherence amongst HIV+ adolescents (10-19-year-olds).

Oversaw 5 civil engineers & social scientists & published 3 journal papers & 1 report as the lead investigator of 2 interdisciplinary studies about the implementation of alternative sanitation technologies & services for informal settlements. Advised the City of Cape Town on the rehabilitation of South Africa’s only vacuum sewer & its establishment of a municipally-managed janitorial service for shared/communal toilets. Collaborated with a local ICT venture to test digital survey tools in areas with limited coverage.

Supervised a 7-person research team that investigated anti-retroviral treatment adherence in the world’s largest study on HIV+ adolescents (Mzantsi Wakho).
