Chair Of The Board
President & Ceo
Served as Altarum’s President | CEO starting in 2007. Also a member of the Altarum Board of Trustees and Chairman | CEO of Altarum's Federal Consulting Asset Management company.During his time as CEO, accelerated Altarum's growth in its health-focused mission field. Altarum has organically grown revenues from $15M in 2005 to approximately $50M, plus made a series of acquisitions and divestitures to diversify and expand Altarum's health and health care capabilities and market presence. Altarum’s health research and consulting revenue now exceeds $75M annually (despite Altarum divesting over the last few years 3 units with aggregate revenue exceeding $20M at times of sale). In addition, led the development of the Institute’s strategic research agenda. This work comprised internally-chartered R&D projects, “mission projects” designed to test promising health systems changes in real-world settings, and four research centers, each focused on an Altarum-defined “critical systems issue.”
Chief Operating Officer
Led the Institute’s health systems research and consulting activities since joining the organization as its chief operating officer (COO) in 2001—following Altarum’s acquisition of Vector Research, Incorporated (VRI).During his time as COO, Altarum grew its existing research and consulting practices; and its strategic moves created greater mission focus. With the acquisition of VRI in 2001 Altarum comprised a very diverse $45M mix of clients and subject matter domains--defense analytics, health care studies and information management, IT services, environmental analysis, and automotive industry studies. Despite selling the IT services unit and spinning off the automotive practice, Altarum grew to nearly $60M by 2005. Starting in '05, led Altarum's complete transformation to focus solely on health and health care. In 2006-7, Altarum successfully divested its non-health operations (approximately 70% of its total revenues), positioning the Institute for aggressively investment in its growth in health and health care.
President & Coo
Before joining Altarum, served as VRI’s President of VRI from 2000 to 2001, and Vice President and Director of Corporate Business Development from 1999 to 2000. From 1996 to 1999, led new initiatives in VRI’s health sector and served as the Director of the Healthcare Planning Division. Major programs included:(1) Development of the Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR)—an automated information system for tracking childhood immunizations, lead screening and now, body mass index screening across the state. VRI’s development of MCIR made Michigan the first state in the United States to have a system deployed statewide to both public and private providers. (2) A one-of-a-kind, enterprise-level health care simulation models to examine alternative system changes in health care and a patient cohort simulation to investigate the cost and quality impacts of alternative disease management strategies for various chronic diseases. Joined VRI in 1988 as a Systems Engineer, shortly after completing his master’s in industrial and operations engineering at the University of Michigan, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Studies Fellow. Worked in VRI’s national security and health business sectors. As a national security analyst at VRI, developed and applied analytical methods to help military leaders make decisions about force design, equipment acquisition, mobilization, deployment, and arms control strategies.
