My research interests center around positive youth development, particularly around social media use. My broader interests include risky and resilient adolescent digital worlds, youth advisory boards and co-design of positive technology experiences, intersectionality of social identities (e.g., racial/ethnic, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, sociopolitical), relational health, digital citizenship, and civic engagement. I have been a Principal Investigator on work funded by NICHD, Children and Screens: Institute Digital Media & Child Development, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, William T. Grant Foundation, Schott Foundation for Public Education, and the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital. I have been co-investigator or evaluator on projects funded by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NIH, Kellogg Foundation, Department of Education, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and Aids Action Committee of Massachusetts. I currently collaborate with interdisciplinary partners from Boston Children's Hospital (BCH), Brigham Women's Hospital (BWH), Tufts University, and the League of Resident Theaters (LORT). These projects range from methodological innovations in studying adolescent mobile/app use (BCH) to highlighting racial dialogue between Asian American teens and their parents and friends (BWH) to uncovering racial/ethnic glass ceilings for leaders in the theater world (LORT) to understanding the benefits and challenges of having pets for adolescent development (and screen use).I am also a consulting expert at the Jed Foundation, which is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the mental health of teens and young adults and at Meta, specifically for the Instagram Wellbeing Creator Collective - a pilot initiative to connect experts on adolescent wellbeing with social media influencers to promote more uplifting and positive messages for teens on Instagram.
