Laboratory Management

• Managed grants and $6.5 million budget for the Conservation Department of a nonprofit land stewardship organization • Coordinated and conducted research; managed field courses; wrote proposals; managed research permits and field station • Co-chair of the 8th California Islands Symposium, a scientific conference held every five years hosting over 500 participants

As Interim Chair of Education, directed a department of 13 education managers • Designed and implemented environmental education and sustainability programs for students, community, and local landowners/conservation practitioners at the Museum’s 2,000 acre natural reserve • Managed department budget and finances; represented department at Board meetings and community functions• Developed and administered a high school academy for environmental leadership based on AP high school curriculum and student service project

Project Manager, Ecosystem-Based Management of a Fijian Seascape, Wildlife Conservation Society, Bronx, New York This project was funded through private conservation donors at $1.3 million. A network of twenty-one marine reserves covering 170 km2 and one forest reserve within the watershed were established and persist (2014) under a community management plan.• Managed project work plans, field station, field activities, communications, donor and partner relations and coordination, and budget. • Managed supplemental funding efforts and grant reporting; supervised a staff of eleven scientists and project officers. Recruited scientists and facilitated research for collaborative projects. • Organized and facilitated a national symposium on the science of marine protected areas and ecosystem-based management. Project Director, Fiji Forest Conservation InitiativeThe initiative aimed to integrate conservation and ecosystem management goals into a national forestry certification program, and to develop specific measures for the implementation of Fiji’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.• Managed project logistics and budget; hired, managed staff; coordinated scientific collaborations; conducted comprehensive ecological surveys and analyses of Fijian forests as a foundation for certification guidelines. Studies included minimum-area requirements for large parrots, surveys for hotspots for endemic species, and ecosystem-service analyses of watersheds and linkages to coastal fisheries and livelihoods. • Developed and administered an island-wide forestry education campaign, focusing on biodiversity, human health and ecosystem services of functioning, intact watersheds.

Responsibilities included building partnerships between agricultural communities and conservation groups to promote sustainable practices; fundraising; advocacy to increase the level of awareness in the government and public of bird conservation issues. • Researched and compiled detailed scientific profiles of pesticides most harmful to avian species. Participated as a consulting scientist in US EPA organophosphate re-registration meetings. • Led a successful community-based alliance of conservation groups and citizens to remove from use the pesticide fenthion in the U.S. when it was found to kill endangered Piping Plovers and many other species of birds in Florida.• Working with ABC’s Board of Directors and major donors, obtained funding for the development of an avian West Nile Virus vaccine; participated in the design and evaluation of the vaccine trial. This vaccine is currently administered to all remaining California Condors and many other threatened or endangered avian species.
