At Praxair, I enjoyed the strategic development of the business plans needed for the overall management of the national liquid and compressed hydrogen businesses. Sales support and the efficient deployment of assets in this capital intense business was vital for its growth and efficient generation of profits.My career at Praxair started as a process engineer with the engineering group. Later, I was promoted to a production supervisor and then a product manager for carbon dioxide and atmospheric gases (oxygen, nitrogen and argon). Through that journey, I adopted the natural hydrogen portfolio and nurtured its profitability across Canada and in many markets. By the time I left Praxair, I was a national product and sourcing manager for hydrogen, carbon dioxide and specialty gases (helium, krypton and xenon) and was responsible for leveraging relationships with stakeholders to improve overall performance of the P&L for all these business lines. As the process engineering manager, I had the unique opportunity of mentoring a team of junior process engineers during a time of depressed pulp prices, high union tensions and low morale. Together my team and I embraced the challenge and we improved all areas of the Kraft Pulp Mill in Gold River. This role fueled my understanding that, regardless of how technical a role is, success always comes down to building and supporting the right team.

In my first role out of University, I invented the ‘moat water recirculation’ system to eliminate effluent and improve a site’s environmental performance. This innovation was successfully applied to the specialty chemicals operations and was featured at the 1988 International Carbon Bisulfide conference hosted by Monsanto Corporation. Right from the starting gate, I understood that the world of engineering is a made for those who want to solve problems in innovative ways, and I’ve never looked back.
