Full Time Faculty & Faculty Associate For Enti Student Ambassador Program

Current
Donald P. Bellisario College Of Communications, Penn State

University Park, Pa

After 19 years with the Penn State SBDC, as of August 2018, I accepted a full-time faculty appointment with the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications. I continue as the Faculty Advisor to Happy Valley Comm, the awesome student run firm. Between Fall 2018 and Spring 2022, I was the Faculty Associate for the Lion Launch Pad Living Learning Community Entrepreneurship floor in North Halls which was a dedicated living option for freshmen and sophomores interested in learning more about Penn State's entrepreneurship culture. We had our own unique maker-space, open only to the LLP LLC students. For Fall 2022, I am launching the new ENTI Student Ambassador program, where select students, pursuing ENTI as a minor, will help promote and increase enrollment of that minor. My teaching load for 2022 to 2023 includes teaching an entrepreneurship class that is part of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor (ENTI), a Telecommunications management class and a First Year Seminar. Between fall 2020 and Spring 2022, I was one of the pitch coaches for the amazing student startups that are coming out of the various Launch Boxes across the University Commonwealth system - including of course, Happy Valley Launch Box here in State College. Also during 2020 – 2022, I coached the inspiring student startups that were invited to present their early stage startups during the Penn State Venture and IP Conference in April 2021 and 2022 as well as at The President’s tailgate in Fall 2021. Since folks have asked - yes it is true that after more than a decade of involvement with Penn State's response to Global Entrepreneurship Week, my only role now is to offer it as an activity to my various classes. GEW is now in the capable hands of Elizabeth Fegert at the Penn State SBDC. As I noted in the header above, I continue to be incredulous I am paid money to do something that I love so much. Life is good.

Aug 2018 - Present

Faculty Advisor

Current

I am the faculty adviser for a student organization that is essentially a student run public relations firm. It is a dynamic group of students who are primarily public relations or advertising majors who have created a firm that reaches out to other student run organizations assisting them with publicity on their organization. They also have worked with some SBDC clients who are willing to sign a publicity release allowing the students to talk about them as a client and what work HVC has done on their behalf.

Oct 2009 - Present

Freelance Columnist

Current
Pennsylvania Magazine

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

I freelance write for this privately owned regional (covers state of PA) magazine. Due to COVID, I took a one year hiatus until January 2022. Prior to this occurring, except for a brief sabbatical in 2014, I have written their bed and breakfast column since November 1991 with the first column appearing in January 1992. I also write an occasional sidebar article to accompany the column. It's what I term my 'vacation fun job'. I have stayed in hundreds of B & B's – ninety percent in Pennsylvania - and have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and visit all 67 counties in Pennsylvania multiple times over the years. For over a decade my daughter accompanied me on our trips - as in someone was paying me to spend time with my daughter. But in 2010 she graduated from Penn State and began her own life journey. I travel solo now and love the chance to meet new people and stay at a myriad of wonderful B & B's. And yes - they are what I term 'real B & B's - not AirBnB properties. In November 2019, I was asked to share my 28 plus years of experience as a columnist as the lunch time speaker at the annual Pennsylvania Bed and Breakfast Association (PABBI) conference. It was fun to chat with innkeepers who I have featured in past columns and find out that months or years later, they continue to receive phone calls as a result of the column I wrote about them.

Nov 1991 - Present

Faculty Advisor To The Global Entrepreneurship Week Student Organization. (Gewc)

Global Entrepreneurship Week Club

Penn State

I was the Faculty Advisor to the GEWC. They were a group of students who managed one of the days of Penn State's response to GEW , taping into Penn State resources for student orgs to bring in amazing speakers. Now that GEW has pivoted to be more community centrist event and less student focused, the raison d'etre of this org has gone away. Nice group of students for a couple of years who planned some cool events and traveled to San Francisco so explore the startup culture in the city.

Sales Associate

Creative Expressions was based in Robesonia, PA and they sold fun needlework and crewel patterns through a home party plan. Since I was already teaching crewel in my home, it seemed like a good fit. The problem was that I ended up spending most of my commissions on more and more kits and decided in the end that I would need to live to 100 before I could ever complete them. It was a fun evening position that enabled me to meet like minded women, but decades later, I still have an attic full of as yet uncompleted projects. When I started Rest and Repast in 1982, I resigned from CE.

Coppercraft Guild

Coppercraft Guild in Taunton, Mass was a popular home party plan in the late 70's and early 80's selling decorative copper kitchenware and household items.
