Collaborative, agile and process-oriented problem solver. Fascinated by alternative solutions and always positive there are better ways to do everything--Old Ways, New Ways, Simple Ways, Foreign Ways, Natural Ways, High Tech, Low Tech, Collaborative, & Sustainable Ways--above all, environmentally sound ways for a world that works for people and nature. I am a business analyst, software & database designer, project manager, knowledge manager, instructional designer, educator & technical writer involved in nearly all areas of environmentalism and sustainability through Houston's many pro-environmental organizations. I have primarily worked in IT, but my interest is sustainable & resilient lifestyles, wildlife & ecosystems, and environmentally compatible livelihoods & communities. I was a travel agent for 6 years, then worked my way through college as a Licensed Customs Broker. While an educator at a science museum, I produced an award-winning educational TV series. Later, fell into IT & designed web-based software solutions & improved workflow that tripled capacity for a very high-volume non-profit training organization. I've collaborated with stakeholders across departments and entities to design & implement solutions. I've composed strategic plans and mission, vision & belief statements to keep messaging and actions aligned with goals. I utilized knowledge management & collaboration tools to provide on-demand instruction & facilitate communication. I have gained experiences by organizing, participating or volunteering with several non-profits working on all aspects of sustainability--buildings & materials, energy, agriculture, waste, consumer behavior, wildlife & ecosystem conservation. My services for these organizations include internal & social media communications, newsletters, public relations, education & event coordination including Permaculture garden & compost projects, solar panel installation, lecture & film series, and volunteer/school group coordination.

Board President & Programs ManagerHouston Urban Gardeners (Hug) May 2016 - PresentThe Houston Urban Gardeners is devoted to encouraging & supporting Houstonians in growing their own food and supporting local growers. We do this with a monthly meeting and presentation, field trips and other events. Membership and most events are free of charge and open to all. BTW, everyone should grow greens, if you have any space at all. Especially kale & collards which are cut & come again, not annuals, once started can survive through summer even in hot climates, don't need that much sun, and are some of the best foods you can add to your diet. Add greens to verything--soups, casseroles, eggs, sandwiches...

Director Of Communications & InformationLast Organic Outpost Jun 2013 - Sep 2015Create and maintain solutions to all internal & external Communications & Information needs, as I help to organize and grow this loosely organized, volunteer-run, non-profit urban farming organization dedicated to growing local, organic food in the food desert of Houston's neglected 5th Ward, This area suffers from high unemployment, a blighted landscape and a lack of access to healthy food. We believe we are the solution to all those problems, while also making local organic food available to all of Houston. The Last Organic Outpost generates healthy communities and establishes a local food economy in Houston's under-served neighborhoods through urban farming and farm-based art & education. We empower communities through sustainable agriculture that teaches residents to produce safe, healthy and accessible food for all. We envision growing 'Food Everywhere' and seeding an Urban Agricultural District that cultivates our region's food and supports local farmers to thrive despite economic, environmental, health and social challenges. Our aim is to create Food Security through Food Everywhere! http://www.lastorganicoutpost.com

Owner, Consultant, Analyst, Database And Software Designer, Project ManagerMarrder Omnimedia Jan 1999 - 2012We make rich internet applications. We made the innovative decision way back in 1998 to never make anything that wasn't natively web-based. It was a little difficult to sell to clients on it back then as they had to be convinced that being web-based didn't mean everything was 'out there' where everyone would see it. Many times we also had to invent the wheel ourselves since we were ahead of our time. But it has meant that clients could branch out at almost a moment's notice.I performed business analysis of data, business processes and communications to ensure our solutions streamline workflow and are in strategic alignment with clients’ big picture goals. Design and coordinate production & implementation of databases and custom software including a computer-based learning and records management system for a very unique, very high volume, non-profit adult vocational training organization that nearly tripled production capabilities and opened up new markets and revenue streams. Created intranets and implemented business development, customer relations and collaboration tools. Made hardware, platform and other technology decisions. Scripted and produced computer-based training programs and promotional video. Created print and online documentation for custom software packages. Published award-winning weekly web-based newspaper.

Business Analyst, Database & Software Solutions ConsultantHouston Area Safety Council Oct 1999 - Jan 2009I spent several years creating a myriad of solutions for the Houston Area Safety Council that has allowed them to become possibly the largest workforce training facility in the world. Their vendor tells them they are right behind the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority as the biggest North American users of the PVC cardstock used for trainee ID badges. HASC prepares an enormous number of workers for employment in chemical plants, refineries & other industrial facilities around the world and for those employers & site managers to verify all who enter the facility are appropriately screened and trained. I analyzed work processes and data needs to redesign the workflow, database & interfaces for computer based training, registration & record keeping for training, background & substance abuse screening, medical assessments and more. I used Agile methodology in designing the solutions in components so we could quickly implement solutions with the most impact without any down time or data loss. I functioned as the Project Manager during the development & implementation. I even had the building remodeled and furniture designed. This software and workflow improvement allowed them to triple capacity within the same building and almost the same staff. And they've continued to grow, building an expansive campus in 2014 where the volume of trainees and additional services require a main CBT lab with over 600 seats. Working with HASC & other collaborators, my company also created the North American Background Screening Consortium (NABSC) and the North American Substance Abuse Program (NASAP) and the online Contractor Pre-Qualification Database to aggregate & securely share data among several entities.

Licensed Customs Broker, Import ManagerColumbia Shipping Sep 1993 - 1995Worked with a worldwide network of agents to coordinate the shipment and receipt of imported goods. Decipher federal code to clear goods through customs and other federal agencies. Interpreting the Code of Federal Regulations and Tariffs is the hard part and why the Licensed Customs Broker exam has an 80% failure rate even with years of experience. It isn't what you know but how good you are at finding it out and how well you can interpret the legalese. The other part of the job is building network of agents worldwide to get goods from door to door. And completing & submitting forms. Lots of forms. -
