I help civil society clients with manage complexity. This includes taking an ethnographic an anthro-complexity approach to research and evaluation. I help clients design their research project, analyse the data and write reports. I develop concepts and write technical papers about topics related to managing complexity such as an approach to theory of change that is suitable for complex environments. I have also facilitated panels and meetings and attended training courses on complex facilitation, and I developed training materials on citizen journalism.I participated in the Leadership for Transition project and co-authored a paper on using a digital ethnographic tool in political contexts.

I lobbied UK Government for a Citizens' Assembly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency. This was in part achieved (Climate Assembly UK), but the assembly did not meet the standards my team and I set informed by meetings with democracy academics. I also helped write a early draft of the Climate & Ecological Emergency Bill which is now on it's second reading in the House of Commons, and has 92 signatures. I undertook a range of different tasks within this role such as project management, researching citizens' assembly designs, writing briefings to be presented to MPs, giving talks on 'What is a Citizens' Assembly? And Why Do We Need One on the Climate and Ecological Emergency?' And creating materials to raise awareness on this topic for general audiences.

I conducted impact assessments on the efficacy of the charity’s reading programmes. I visualised the data using analysis software and presented it to senior members of staff. I also consulted on survey design and questions.

I managed the community of volunteers for the Strike Tracker project with Amnesty Decoders with Amnesty International's Crisis Response team. For this project, we are crowdsourcing data processing, in which volunteers examine satellite images of the rubble of Raqqa, Syria and determine when buildings were damaged. This allows us to establish the exact timeline of when the US-led coalition bombed Raqqa, thereby killing hundreds, wounding thousands and destroying approx. 80% of the city. I answered questions on the forum and motivated Decoders to contribute more and to help each other out when they are stuck on a task. This improved by community management skills because I had to keep morale high and deal with issues and suggestions diplomatically. I also took the initiative to write a blog post about common mistakes and how to rectify them. Together with the team, I promoted the project through social media, organised a Q&A with one of the researchers who has been to Raqqa, and organised a Decoders party/hackathon to invite new users to contribute. I also drafted social media posts and asked Decoders to share them online in order to leverage their online connections.

I have a keen interest in human rights so I jumped at the opportunity to research how politicians apologise for them and how these apologies are received. I compiled a database of public apologies for human rights violations made by politicians . This involved searching through a partial database of files and compiling an Excel spreadsheet with the apology texts and details of the apologies, such as the countries involved, the seniority of the politician and the human rights abuses committed. I also conducted computational text analyses on the apologies, including computational text analysis, sentiment and content analysis and topic modelling.

My main role was working with the Good Problems team, who take a problem-led approach to research funding and challenge prizes. I conducted a landscape review and key informant interviews for The Frontier, a venture-focused challenge prize. I identified neglected areas of research and the most viable avenues for science-based start-ups within the topic of better baby nutrition. Despite previously knowing nothing about this topic, I quickly familiarised myself with a large body of research literature. I conducted desk research, generated questions, and selected and interviewed industry and academic experts. I synthesised the findings and integrated the interviewees’ feedback to create a client-facing report. Together with my manager, I facilitated knowledge exchange meetings with the entrants. I enjoyed working in this fast-paced environment to meet all of the project’s deadlines. I promoted The Frontier through emails and social media. I liaised with interviewees and potential applicants and managed calendars. Further, I advised on how to conducting experimental research to show the strengths of the Good Problems approach to funding and on how to market the approach. Moreover, I conducted market research on Kenyan farmers for the Soil Cards project. I quickly learned how to find relevant information and produced a report my manager was very pleased with.

With Science: Disrupt, I wrote, recorded and edited my own podcast about citizen science, Citizens Disrupt. I interviewed researchers, DIY bio enthusiasts and extreme citizen scientists. I selected and contacted speakers, generated questions, recorded and sound quality, and edited the audio using Audacity. This was my first experience with creating a podcast, and so I was thrown in the deep end. However, I love learning new skills, so 'the deep end' is a place I am very comfortable with. I also wrote several pop science articles and live Tweeted coverage of the Hello Tomorrow Global Summit, which gained Science: Disrupt an extra 200 followers. I used videos, photos and hashtags to ensure posts were engaging and reached the right audience. I collaborated with Prof Nicholas Hopkins to build on my final year dissertation project, in which I aimed to gain a greater understanding of the psychological factors which contribute to communicable disease outbreaks at mass gatherings. We investigated whether festival goers are more likely to share intimate resources (i.e., resources which when shared create the potential for pathogen transmission) with other festival goers when they identify more strongly with them. I interviewed festival goers on the final day of several music festivals in Scotland, Ireland and Wales and analysed the data with ATLAS.ti, qualitative analysis software.

As part of a close-knit AV team, I filmed live acts on stage. This improved my listening skills because I was required to follow precise instructions without the opportunity to clarify. I quickly learned how to operate the camera equipment and to vision mix (i.e., directing three camera-people and controlling the live feed to the screens). This experience required strong multitasking skills, and communications skills because I needed to give instructions quickly, effectively and politely.

I planned and led activities for international students, escorted them on excursions, led city tours of Dublin city and ensured the health and safety of the students. I enjoyed working with a tight-knit team in a fast-paced, sometimes chaotic, environment. I often had to come up with alternative, practical solutions to ensure students' and their chaperones' needs were met.This greatly improved my client handling skills. When the unexpected would happen, students and their supervisors could be very frustrated. I learned how to manage the situation with diplomacy by understanding their frustrations and how best they could be resolved. I also enjoyed building rapport with the students and their chaperones and encouraging the students to improve their English skills.
