PresidentBeaverton Education Association Jul 2022 - PresentBeaverton, Oregon, United StatesBEA serves 2,700 certified educators and 1,100 licensed substitute educators. Our leadership team works to bargain and maintain meaningful and impactful collective bargaining agreements; engage members in a variety of actions and organizing opportunities; identify, train, and elevate member leaders as building reps, contract action team members, committee members, OEA RA delegates, member organizers, and more; increase member involvement in local, state, and national union business as well as local school board business; and educate and involve members in political action at the local, state, and national levels.Bargaining Team (Certified Educators) (2023-present) - we are in the midst of a full contract bargain for our certified educators with a solid team, a growing Contract Action Team, and member organizers. We have revolutionized our bargains by inviting BEA members in to not only sit with us as we bargain at the table, but observe our team caucus discussions. We are increasing transparency and identifying member leaders who are excited to get more involved in the bargaining process. -
Vice PresidentBeaverton Education Association Jul 2020 - Jul 2022Beaverton, Oregon, United StatesWorked with BEA members and other BEA leaders in a variety of ways, including pursuing grievances, supporting members through disciplinary procedures, working to keep members engaged through the pandemic, transforming our local school board, increasing member engagement in school board meetings and decisions, and fighting to keep members and students safe and informed during the pandemic.Bargaining Team (Certified Non-Substitute Educators) (2021-22) - served on the full contract bargaining team in 2021-2022 in which we saw great language and compensation gains, and helped to negotiate several agreements for safe learning conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.Bargaining Team (Licensed Substitute Educators) (2022) - served as the chair for the team negotiating the full contract for BEA Substitute Educators in 2022, and helped to bring in member voice to the table. Also helped to negotiate significantly higher substitute pay during 2021-22 as we weathered the pandemic. -
Executive Board MemberBeaverton Education Association Jul 2018 - Jul 2020Supported Building Reps from across BSD to problem solve issues at their worksite, help with disciplinary meetings as needed, and with communications from the BEA leadership team to reps and rank and file members. As a board member, I also helped to steer the organization's priorities, maintain a responsible budget, and critique and improve systems and processes within our local association. Political Campaign Leadership Cohort (2019-2022) - This group learned how to run campaigns, and we worked to elect public education friendly candidates to the BSD School Board, soundly defeating candidates who were anti-union and anti-educator. BEA Organizing Cadre (2019) - in the summer after the Student Success Act was passed, I chaired a local organizing cadre to solicit input from students, families, and community members to be included in the school district's grant application for local funding. We visited PTO meetings, farmer's markets, and community events to connect with people all over the city of Beaverton. -
Building RepresentativeBeaverton Education Association Aug 2015 - Aug 2018Supported members at my worksite with a variety of issues, held monthly climate meetings with school admin, represented members during disciplinary meetings, and was a liaison between BEA leadership and members. -
Rank And File MemberBeaverton Education Association Aug 2013 - Jul 2018Beaverton Teachers Political Action Committee (2016-present) - interview and endorse candidates running for local and state office, provide updates and information on political developments and events that impact local BEA members, encourage members to become active in politics, help to organize canvassing, phone banking, text banking, and other actions to support endorsed candidates and get out the vote. During the May 2023 election, helped to push our local member voting percentage to 91%.BEA Racial and Social Justice Committee (2016 - present) - I created this committee in BEA, and we talked about ways for our local union to support educators and students in marginalized communities, to support equity work being done at local worksites, to educate members about implicit bias, Oregon history, and resources to support students, and to join with community members in fighting for racial and social justice.Bargaining Team (Certified Educators) (2018-19) - served to bargain a strong contract for BEA members!Measure 97 Cadre (2016) - I led the efforts for voter outreach for Measure 97 in Beaverton, which would have established a Corporate Activities Tax that would fund public education. We facilitated several evenings of phone banking by local union members as well as various community members, which included training. -
