Bennett in the Vision and Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at McMaster UniversityMy research sought to answer the question: how does our ability to detect objects surrounded by clutter change with age? Central detection of objects has been shown to be less influenced by large, high-contrast surrounds in older adults and this is thought to be related to decreased amounts of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the visual cortex. I examined the healthy aging brain's ability to discern changes in simple visual stimuli. This required designing experiments in Matlab to display static and moving stimuli with specific parameters to younger and older participants and to collect and store useful data. I would then upload the data sets to R where I would perform statistical analyses to test my hypotheses. My results suggest that younger brains are better at focusing on details and can ignore the background, and older brains are better able to take in the whole scene for brief, moving stimuli only.
