I am a UK Charted Patent Attorney (CPA) and European Patent Attorney specialising in biotechnology at Mathys & Squire. I am based in Cambridge but also spend time in the London, Oxford and Newcastle offices. I passed the 2020-2021 PGCert in IP Law from Queen Mary University of London, the 2022 pre-EQE, the 2022 PEB Qualifying Examinations, and the 2023 eEQEs. I was the Honorary Secretary of the CIPA Informals committee in 2021-2022, and the CIPA IP Ball President 2022-2023.I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a PhD in Biological Sciences (focussing on antibiotic resistance in the gut microbiome) in January 2020. I also hold a First Class BSc Genetics from Cardiff University (2015). I am interested in connecting with people in similar fields and former colleagues. I combined high-throughput culturing and phenotyping of gut bacteria with whole genome and metagenome shotgun sequencing to study the incidence and evolution of antibiotic resistance in the gut microbiome. I used both human samples and mouse models with human-derived microbiota. This allowed for high-resolution, powerful studies to seek novel and relevant insights into how the microbiome responds to antibiotics.

The first eight months of the PhD were spent on three 10-week rotation projects. The first involved computational analysis of PacBio sequencing data for the National Collection of Type Cultures, using a comparative genomics approach to study bacterial DNA methylation motifs in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The second involved investigating gut microbiomes of Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes, looking for links between microbiota composition and malaria transmission e.g. correlations between presence/absence of particular bacteria species and Plasmodium parasites. The third project initiated functional validation of a novel microRNA in Schistosoma mansoni blood flukes.

A combination of broad biology and specialist modules in genetics, genomics and bioinformatics were studied. The third year was spent undertaking a Professional Training Year at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the Conservation Genetics department studying genetic variability in rare orchids. The final year dissertation involved a six month computational study of antibiotic resistance dissemination in hospital-acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Russia. Mini research projects involved annotating bacterial genomes and cloning a gene from Klebsiella pneumoniae into Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
The 12 months of my undergraduate degree were spent at Kew working under "Conservation Genetics of Threatened Species". This project involved being responsible for the development and application of genetic markers to study genetic variation in Cephalanthera longifolia, C. damasonium and C. rubra - three orchid species that are declining in the UK. As a result of this work and related projects, three reports were authored for Natural England; a 6000 word report was also submitted to Cardiff University, achieving 75% and a First Class result which contributed to my final degree.
