Placement Student
I participated in the Year Abroad program by spending a year working at Novosibirsk State University, under the supervision of Professor Elena Boldyreva (NSU) and Professor Colin Pulham (UoE). My project focused on the topic of small molecule polymorphism. A change in the crystalline structure can result in differences in properties between polymorphic forms. This is of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry as it can affect a drugs method of action. Paracetamol is a widely used active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and has 3 known polymorphic forms. Metacetamol is structurally similar to paracetamol however little was known about its potential polymorphic forms. I was able to show that a second polymorphic form exists, form II, and can be obtained from the melt in a reproducible manner. The bonding and stability of metacetamol form II was investigated using a vast range of analytical techniques, including both thermal and spectroscopic. Through the investigation of structurally similar metacetamol, previously unknown information may be obtained about paracetamol; thus both furthering the knowledge of structurally similar compounds and the relationships that can exist between polymorphs.
Teacher Of English Language
For the six week duration, I was responsible for the organisation of approximately four English lessons per day, as well as arranging supplementary educational and sporting activities. I also acted as an aid on many of the weekend excursions to neighbouring sites of interest.• Independence - travelled to Russia in order to teach English at an English Summer School.• Creativity - developing lessons and educational games for children aged between 8 - 14.
