Stepping into "retirement" without a plan often means finding themselves in a place they didn't expect and don't want. The Next Steps works with businesses to help them understand how• ageism and assumptions, often unconscious, impacts the mental health of more mature workers• working effectively with a multi-generational workforce increases staff satisfaction and productivity • supporting people to live well after work positively impacts the business and the economy We work with individuals 1-2-1 or in groups in the workplace who are considering leaving work and help them consider “what’s next” and to understand • their responsibility to communicate their needs to their employer and initiate support• how to manage the critical transition away from work, both psychologically and financially, in a planned way • how to identify their options, make choices and, with self-belief and confidence, contribute to the community and society and create a sense of purpose and control over their lives. The amazing group of people who work and volunteer there have huge hearts and boundless commitment to care for and support their vulnerable clients. It gave me great pleasure and a sense of fulfillment to use my skills, experience and connections to help them make a huge difference to homeless people's lives and help them off the streets and to move towards living independently again.

I chair a board of talented, successful, high achieving and ambitious women who own their own businesses or are senior decision makers. We come together once a month to explore and help each other find solutions to specific business issues. We empower, advise and support each other in a unique and rewarding way in an ethical and confidential environment.

With two other directors, I set up a social enterprise funded by a philanthropic organisation that was eager to support our goals. Chapter3 worked primarily with people over 50 who had left work and then become stuck. We helped them identify their goals and move towards achieving them whether that was setting up new businesses, finding a job, finding a charity to work with or working out a strategy to follow a dream.

As a volunteer, I assessed the needs of start-up entrepreneurs to ensure their new ventures were set up for success and sustainability, recruited and matched mentors and coaches from established businesses with them, troubleshooting problems and issues as they arose. I am passionate about what I do. People who set up their own businesses later in life are very brave and deserve help from the enterprise and local communities. I am very proud and honoured to have represented PRIME at the Queens Diamond Coronation Festival at Buckingham Palace in 2013 and to receive an award personally from HRH Prince Charles at St James's Palace for the work I did with PRIME.
