As part of this conference, students were invited to present research in a creative, concise, fast-paced style called "Pecha Kucha". Judges from acadaemia and industry were recruited to volunteer about 3 hours of their time to learning about this style of presentation, attending 6 presentations of 6 minutes, assessing each presentation using a structured rubric, thoughtfully commenting on the best and worst parts and then submitting this to the organizers. The organizers compared the assessment of the 3 different judges and awarded one student the prize for best Pecha Kucha presentation.Condensing complex research into a 6 minute presentation ensuring it was interesting and understandable was not easy! These students completed a brain-stretching task and the end results were amazing. So much creativity and adaptation was required to stay within the 6 minute limit, keep things fun and not overwhelm the listeners. It was a privilege to assess these presentations and provide feedback that will hopefully help these students present future data in a manner that keeps people entertained rather than overloaded with detail, a serious life skill that researchers everywhere struggle with.
