SabbaticalIndependent Travel Dec 2016 - Dec 2017South And Central AmericaThrough a combination of overland group travel, home stays and independent travel I spent 2017 travelling from the southern tip of South America to the Caribbean coast of Mexico. My journey took me through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia in South America and after a 5-day yacht sail from Cartegena, Colombia I arrived in Panama City to continue through Central America via Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize and finally Mexico. En-route I met many wonderful and interesting people, listened to fascinating tales of past and present, of pirates and explorers, wandered many ancient towns and cities, hiked, trekked, rode, canoed, snokelled, and swam some truly stunning places. I visited a vast number of UNESCO world heritage sites absorbing spectacular street art, tasting local culinary delights and absorbing the local culture and hospitality on many streets, rivers and mountainsides. I also saw some sad, worrying and arguably avoidable sights and situations: extreme poverty large scale, basic living conditions and environmental destruction and contamination. Immense amounts of rubbish increasing due to local and global behaviour. Such a contrast of stunning beauty and destruction cohabiting yet screaming out for attention and change. Despite all this I saw extreme happiness and love and a proud sense of community…and lots of football!Playing just a small part in the community I was privileged to teach English in a secondary school in Bolivia - such an incredibly enjoyable project. I was also part of a team helping to build safe stoves for indigenous families in Guatemala, without which exposed their families to toxic and life-threatening fumes – such a humbling experience.
