We operated from a building that was constructed in 1954 and not much had changed....The company was purchasing other buildings within our small rural West Virginia town in order to store, you guessed it, more paper and bankers boxes. Premium and policy count had decreased for 10 consecutive years and agencies were considering other carrier opportunities due to our inefficiencies. After assuming the role of President & CEO in October 2008, I realized that things had to change and they had to start changing fast in order for us to reverse our downward trend and start competing again. Our independent agency force was frustrated due to the company’s outdated manual processes and cumbersome methods. Immediately, the company began to strategize and construct a solid foundation that would allow the internal staff to communicate more effectively with each other and externally with both our agency force and policyholders. This foundation started with the complete modernization of our IT infrastructure, a massive cross-training effort, and finally a new 5,800 square foot home office with updated technology. There were additional accomplishments that resulted in mass efficiency gains, which allowed continuous growth with current resources. The strategy and dedication of both our staff and agency force has led to 15 consecutive years of increased policy count and premium growth. Municipal has doubled in written premium and policyholder surplus while retaining an AM Best A- rating. Show less
