From international experience of 500 cities in the world, the WB Urban, Rural, Social and Resilience Global Practice designed a city competitiveness project for four cities in Africa out of which one was Addis Ababa. In addition to helping city executives develop an awareness of competitiveness, there were also about six quick research studies to help identify bottlenecks of investment, tease out strong competitive areas for the city, and job multiplier of various jobs in the city among others. In the project, we also worked to create appreciation in the city executives in the area of improving doing business ranking of the country, for which the Addis Ababa administration could have a distinct contribution. We focused on construction permits and registering property to help the nation score significant points in the doing business index.
