Student

San Luis Obispo, California Area

As a student at California Polytechnic State University I had a predominately hands on learning experience, as the motto of the University is “learn by doing”. In that spirit, classes in the City and Regional Planning Department work with California communities as consultants on real planning projects. The projects I worked on were for the Cities of Buellton and Redwood City, and the unincorporated community of Los Osos. These projects all involved research of relevant issues and policies, analysis of opportunities and constraints, community engagement, and presentation of plans. Final products included, conceptual diagrams, proposed land uses, illustrative plan studies, form-based codes, low-impact codes, 3-D models, renderings, streetscapes, plans for the redevelopment of a major corridor including proposals for land use and economic development, alternative proposals for light rail and bus rapid transit, and safe connections for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Planning Commissioner

City Of Lemoore

Lemoore, California

Chairman 2011; Vice-Chairman 2008 - 2010. Quasi-judicial body appointed by the City Council that develops policies and development standards for the City. Approve/Deny some projects and make recommendations to City Council regarding all legislative matters pertaining to land use, zoning, and General Plan proposals. I was additionally appointed by the City Council to other task forces and twice sat on interview committees for the hiring of consultants.During my time on the Planning Commission there were many disagreements between staff, developers, adjacent landowners, and the Planning Commission. Through very clear oral communication skills, I was able to listen to all sides of the issues, ask precise questions, and distinctly define the problems that each party had. Once the issues were defined, I was responsible for developing many of the compromises between the groups.

Navy Command Family Ombudsman

United States Navy - Volunteer

Washington, Dc; Millington, Tn

This position is appointed by the Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel (DCNP). The day-to-day responsibility of the Navy Family Ombudsman is to serve as the liaison between the command and its family members. I performed this duty with the knowledge that the best way to support mission readiness is to make certain that the member’s family is ready for the mission. During this time I was privileged to sit on quality of life boards held at the Pentagon representing US Navy families worldwide. I was also asked by DCNP to serve on a task force at the Bureau of Medicine to address TRICARE enrollment. As our command was preparing to pack up and relocate to Naval Support ActivityMillington, TN I made bi-monthly trips to Millington to find programs and meet points of contact to start programs ensuring an easy transition of eight-hundred navy families. The base had previously been an A-School serving young sailors straight out of boot camp, but was closed under BRAC, only to later be realigned as home to many top-heavy commands in the DC area. The small town was pleased to have the navy presence back, but was ill-prepared in many ways for the transition of the personnel that were arriving. I worked closely with the local schools helping them to become familiar with the family life of navy families.I served as the liaison of Commander, Navy Personnel Command on several committees throughout the base, including Housing Advisory Board, Morale Welfare and Recreation Council, Healthcare Consumer Council, Volunteer Steering Committee, and Ombudsman Assembly. Additionally, I organized and oversaw monthly blood drives within our command, gave a short speech at bi-monthly indoctrination briefings and assisted with the initial TRICARE enrollment briefings.
