He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition.' Indira GandhiIt is all about the work as an SPM at Place2Be and I include this quote to remind myself that it is on the content of my work and of my character that I will be judged and not through self-endorsement. But six months have passed since I have started this job so I do at last have something to say. That is... I know a little bit of what I am doing! And I have been busy - oh boy have I been busy! This job is stimulating and challenging and rewarding every day in big and tiny ways. It is always about the children, the parents and the staff of the school where wonderful work goes on every day. At my school in South-east London, Place2Be is there in a supportive role to offer play and talking therapy to children one to one and in groups through Place2Talk (a lunchtime drop-in service) and themed groups (eg around moving to secondary school), classroom Circle Times and assemblies. We offer counselling for parents too and a consultation service for staff. I have learnt loads and made plenty of mistakes and still am. And I have been soaring on highs over a connection with a child, a group or an achievement. Next rumbling to the depths at times as I struggle with the diverse aspects of the job and the complex interconnection of relationships and politics of being a service provider and a contractor in school environment with a remote employer in the centre of London.Having said that, Place2Be is tremendously supportive in so many ways. I have to say this is essential for this role. Schools are learning and changing places and the children show all the rainbow of emotions and behaviours as they grapple with so many challenges. I am honoured to be working with them right here, right now as they paint all these colours. Show less -

Working with children is subtle, challenging and rewarding. As children learn through play so it is in counselling. Creating an environment with toys, games, paint and paper, clay, play dough and sand trays and giving them choice allows them the opportunity to work alongside me within the counselling process.I use the skills I have developed using different media and play alongside verbal counselling to help each child deal with painful emotions, to get to know themselves and their feelings, to work on changing behaviours that have negative consequences and to be able to manage better within the external realities of home and school life - which for the most part, neither they, the school nor I have the power to change. I also work with the child's goals, by helping them to explore what comes up for them as sessions continue. Developing a relationship of trust, being real and offering a safe, confidential space offers the child a therapeutic place to be able to do this.I work alongside teachers, parents, special educational needs coordinators and with my supervisor to support my child clients. I keep my eyes and ears open to changes in the dynamic school environment so that I am aware of possible external influences on clients - be they physical or emotional. Schools are hothouses of creative and growing energies - I am thrilled to be part of that growth! Show less -
