About Dr. Lisa K. Johnson
Leader in food loss and waste research - focused on agricultural production. Seasoned horticulturist with a broad range of experience in local, organic, sustainable, conventional, and biotech food and agriculture. My work has been highlighted in Forbes, Huffington Post, American Vegetable Grower magazine, Scienceline, and many other outlets. My research has aimed to understand the loss of edible vegetables. Understanding constraints from the growers’ perspective has been critical, and I always encourage people to incorporate more growers' voices in their work. I am fortunate to be able to work with some of the most forward-thinking specialty crop growers in the country, as well as non-profits, governments, start-ups, industry, and the academy. You can connect with me here, or find me working with colleagues at AgTech Insights, GlobalWonks, IMPACTR, North Carolina State University, ReFED, WWF and others. Feel free to reach out! I'm available as a consultant, board member, advisor, and I'd be open to discussing other roles.
Listed skills include Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pcr, and 40 others.

Independent Consultant
CurrentMy winding career path has led me deep into the most disagreeable possible topic, food loss and waste. I have worked with growers, academics, non-profits, and government to further understand why food sometimes does not reach consumers and can be left unharvested. Check out my website for lots of information and reach out to me with projects and collaborations!

Adjunct Assistant Professor
Senior Research Scholar
In this role, I investigated food loss in processing vegetable production in the midwestern part of the US. Including sweet corn, cucumber, green bean, and blueberry, with short forays into potato, beet, carrot, and others, this research resulted in a publication by World Wildlife Fund called 'No Food Left Behind, part 2.' There is so much more to understand in food loss and waste, particularly in agriculture.
Doctoral Candidate
My current research crosses all the boundaries of agriculture, considering food supply, food safety, resource conservation, and sustainable production, as I dig into the issue of food waste at the farm level. I am working on measuring the vegetable crops that never reach the US food supply. So many crops are left unharvested, usually because the price does not support the labor necessary to harvest. We often hear the statistic that 40% of our food supply is wasted. That figure does not include crops that are unmarketable for one reason or another. Additionally, I am trying to understand grower decision making that contributes to these losses and develop solutions, education, and prevention measures in order to solve this problem. I am supported and advised by an interdisciplinary team of accomplished faculty and intend to graduate in May of 2018. ISTJ, reliable, innovative, dedicated, curious
