TeacherFremont High School / Mandela Law & Public Service Academy Aug 2015 - Aug 2018Oakland, CaliforniaI joined the Mandela Law & Public Service Academy in 2015 to teach "Social Justice & Advocacy," the required course for academy seniors in which they research a social inequity, write a 10-12 page paper, craft a solution and present their findings to a panel of community judges. I serve on the Oakland Unified School District's graduate capstone panel to improve the rigor of senior projects across the district to make sure our students graduate community, college and career ready. My students won five of the six Community Ready awards that our high school received for graduate capstone projects in the Oakland Unified School District. They were five of the 29 seniors awarded these prestigious awards by Oakland Unified and Educating for Democracy in the Digital Age. All five of my students presented their work at a showcase of senior projects on May 19, 2016. Two were among the top three scholarship finalists and one of them won that scholarship.
