My current role focuses on providing technical support within a workshop setting for students, academics and researchers. The workshop is a Light Manufacturing space within the School of Engineering which provides students access to equipment such as laser cutters, bandsaws, vinyl cutter, vacuum former and other specialist equipment, as well as a variety of hand tools.My main duties are to keep the workshop organised and safe for student use, train users in safe working practices and manufacture/prototype designs for academics, researchers and students. Other duties include maintaining the workshop equipment, providing organisational support and making sure all safety documentation is compliant with current regulations. A critical part of the role is inducting hundreds of students into the workshop environment and ensuring that they have all the relevant safety information needed for use of the workshop.

Qwirkshop is a small manufacturing business which I established in 2018. In 4 years I have grown a wide customer base ranging from other local businesses through to well-known Science Communicators and Influencers. I’m a regular supplier for the online shop Maths Gear. I am responsible for all aspects of the business: marketing; website development; equipment maintenance; product design & finances. This has been valuable experience growing my manufacturing and time management skills.

Dealing primarily with the public on open access days, I was responsible for advising people of all ages and abilities on how to use computers to both design and manufacture their creations in the Lab. I mainly helped people with the laser and vinyl cutters, but also have experience of using a CNC router and 3D printers. I collaborated with several artists, helping them to realise their ideas into tangible objects.

My team was responsible for the digitising of tapes, assisting the editors, arranging Producer/Director viewings. liaising with other departments and Channel 4 and technical inspection of transmission tapes before release for broadcast.

This job involved the installation of scientific research equipment in laboratories throughout the world. It was a very customer-driven environment where I installed and tested the machines prior to giving training to the customers on how to operate their new instrument.

As the ‘sandwich’ part of my degree I worked for this subsidiary of Vodafone, designing electronic circuitry for the alarm systems of base stations which were to be sited throughout Europe.
