The purpose of the Disease Intervention Specialist team is to intervene in the spread of communicable diseases. This position will be 1 of the 2 supervisors over teams of Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS). The DIS teams follow up with patients both in clinic settings and in the field (e.g. homes, employers, physicians’ offices, other community agencies). The DIS Public Health Follow Up program is required to meet specific requirements and strict deadlines.Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.Conduct planning, development and evaluation of assigned program.Provide supervision of program implementation.Perform grant writing and management of grant budget.Collaborate with community based organizations.Promote program and provide program information to community.Provide educational and community awareness presentations.Knowledge of the area of specialization.Knowledge of current principles and practices of planning and program implementation.Knowledge of organization and administration of public health and/or human service programs.Knowledge of program monitoring and policy analysis.Skill in effective oral and/or written communication.Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgement.Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.

Conduct blood drawing and handling of urine specimens. Coordinate aspects of investigations with other agencies/personnel. Condut field investigations, screenings and outreach in the community. Counsel individuals on prevention of sexually transmitted diseases e.g. syphilis, AIDS, etc. Follow-up with clients to insure they are receiving proper care. Conduct fact-finding &/or informational interviews. Refer citizens to appropriate agency or program. Answer citizen questions & provide assistance. Conduct investigations on the origin, nature, transmission etc. of sexually transmitted diseases. Conduct checks of doctor's offices, laboratories, clinics, etc. to enforce reporting requirements for sexually transmitted diseases. Research information as requested &/or needed. Write and type informational reports. Compile data/information for reports, cost estimates, etc. Drive vehicles as needed.Knowledge of general public health programs, specifically those related to communicable disease. Knowledge of the principles of communicable disease spread and prevention. Knowledge of laws and regulations concerning communicable disease control. Skill in prioritizing tasks. Skill in oral and written communications, especially interviewing techniques. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees and the public. Skill in recording data from interviews and investigations accurately.
