I'm a proud Anishinaabe Kwe (Ojibwa woman) on my mother’s side and a member of Beausoleil First Nation otherwise known as Chimnissing located in Simcoe County, Ontario. I’m also French, Scottish, Irish and Métis from my dad’s side. It is an honour and a pleasure to live, work in Mohkinstsis, in Treaty 7 where I have resided for over 4 decades. It is here, where I have found my way home and learning about the rich Indigenous culture and traditional ways. There is so much more I need to learn and have no doubt I will be a life-long learner but am committed to learn from many wonderful Elders, teachers and friends who also share this area. These teachings are helping me to heal from the intergenerational trauma which in turn drives my motivation to serve our people whenever I can, to advocate on behalf of Indigenous lead organizations, businesses and leaders. I become overly excited and super chatty to share any of the teachings I have been given, with others who want to learn. When I learn about other cultures I'm always amazed at the vast similarities that we all share - a good reminder to look for commonalty that connects us rather than setting boundaries that only serve to keep us separate. My children have also been my greatest teachers and recently I was reminded by an Elder that all children are "Elders" in disguise. Aho, Hiy Hiy!
