Everyone loves a good story. Sharing experiences is an effective way to encourage others to volunteer in the pro bono space and gather content for media attention and funding bids. As a freelancer for the NPBC, I work with various organisations, like the In House Pro Bono Group and Free Representation Unit, as well as legal advice charities like Dad's House and United Legal Access, to produce stories and profiles they can use to demonstrate their impact and share with others to help highlight the benefits of pro bono volunteering.

I worked regularly as a freelance editor for Thomson Reuters on the Practical Law Company Global Guides, a series of multi-jurisdictional guides covering a wide range of legal topics. I edited and re-wrote copy to make it clearer and put it into house style, liaised with authors to finalise their contributions, managed deadlines and worked closely with in-house colleagues to ensure smooth processes and a high-quality product.

I created and managed communications with all of Advocate's stakeholders. This included drafting all social media messaging (mainly Twitter and LinkedIn) and providing content for the website including writing case studies, news stories, gathering volunteer content and editing the site. I liaised regularly with barristers, judges, applicants, journalists, caseworkers, board members, donors, referral agencies and other members of the access to justice sector, adjusting the tone and substance of communications to suit each need and producing new content as required. I wrote profiles, articles, press releases and planned and managed a fundraising campaign in addition to helping develop a future comms strategy. I also developed videos, podcasts and blogs.

The European Lawyer (EL) was a monthly legal magazine covering a wide range of subjects of interest to modern commercial private practice and in-house lawyers in Europe. My job included writing content, editing, sub-editing and proof-reading all articles received from contributors - both freelance journalists and practising lawyers - writing headlines and standfirsts, commissioning articles and liaising with writers on questions of law, form and content. I worked closely with both the editor and the production manager on issues of style and deadline management.

As a member of the in-house legal team my job involved drafting and negotiating trade mark, copyright and domain name licences and assignments; advising the marketing and e-commerce groups on use of intellectual property; co-ordinating external legal, marketing and trade mark advisors; overseeing the conduct of intellectual property and commercial litigation; approving media and advertising copy and drafting responses to ASA complaints; conducting small claims in the county court; creating and giving departmental presentations on the latest legal developments in litigation and intellectual property; writing and producing guidelines for the marketing department on use of the company's trade marks and copyright and corresponding with potential trade mark, copyright and domain name infringers.
