After completing my PhD in physics, I switched my career for a short while and got certified as a PADI Divemaster at "Tarzan Diving" on Guam Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Working in a scuba dive center had taught many things beyond scuba diving, such as:- Teamwork: A dive center can only run smoothly, when everyone works together. Every evening, the dive center manager and the all dive guides worked out the schedule for the following day. Moreover, I coordinated my daily tasks with the boat captain, the compressor operator, the cook and the other dive guides. - Leadership: As a dive guide, I am responsible for the safety of the guests. Underwater, I was in charge of the route, the dive time and the depths. I had to take into account the skill level of my guests, their wishes as well as the current water conditions. - Customer Service: I welcomed the guests, learned about their skill levels and listened to their wishes and expectation for their dive trip. I distributed rental equipment. I performed safety and dive-plan briefings before and after every dive. - First-aid skills: I refreshed my CPR skills and learned how to use emergency oxygen. I also learned how to stay calm in emergency situations and how to save (unconscious) divers from the surface or below the water.
