I coordinated and implemented the State-wide freshwater biological monitoring program. This involved the logistical planning (using GIS) of spring and autumn field sampling (300+ sites), preparation and maintenance of field equipment (from water quality meters and field test kits to 4-wheel drive vehicles, laboratory maintenance (primarily microscopes and ordering consumables (for example microscope vials and industrial methylated spirits), laboratory work allocations, data collation and quality control and the procurement of external biological monitoring services.I developed skills in all aspects of freshwater biological monitoring including field sampling techniques (including sweep and kick, airlift and artificial substrate), habitat assessment, 4-wheel driving, taxonomic identifications to family and species level, data management, biological indices calculations and report writing.I developed procurement processes to engage external biological monitoring services. This included the development of a technical specification, going out to market in accordance with Victorian Government Purchasing Board policy and procedure, tender submission evaluation, contract writing and proponent debriefing. I assisted in the development and implementation of auditing of internal and contractor staff to ensure data complied with methodology requirements. I managed contractors including auditing and payments.I helped to train new staff and also assisted the senior taxonomists in the review and writing of in-house taxonomic keys. For instance, I wrote a key to Victorian dragonfly and damsel fly nymphs.I researched, developed and implemented GIS skills to mosaic and terrain process Victorian digital elevation models to delineate stream networks (using Arc GIS). The outputs were used to calculate biological index inputs such as catchment area and distance to source which were previously calculated manually. This resulted in saving resources and improved data quality.
