Head of public affairs and marketing at the largest hospital in Washington DC and head of marketing for the Washington region of MedStar Health, the largest health care provider in the Washington and Baltimore region. In charge of marketing, public affairs, internal communications, editorial services, media relations, crisis management, and web/internet services. Seasoned counselor to CEOs having worked directly for 16 CEOs and presidents and provided guidance and support to top associations, members of Congress and the executive office. Experienced Washington public relations executive having worked successfully with the highest levels of government, including the White House. Received the lifetime achievement award in the field at age 40. Recipient of more than 600 awards both personally and through the work of the staff I have supervised.

One of the top three executives of this high profile national association representing America's nurses during a time of great importance to the advancement of the field of nursing. I worked closely with Virginia Trotter Betts, then president of ANA, as she forged a close linkage to the Clinton adminstration and worked to advance the professional practice of nursing as part of the administration's health care reform initatives. I developed several major communications campaigns during my tenure including two that received Silver Anvil awards from PRSA. These included "In the Future Your Doctor Will Be a Nurse" conceived to create direct reimbursement for Nurse Practioners who delivered primary care services to patients and "Every Patient Deserves a Nurse", a public affairs campaign to thwart the replacement of nurse by Unlicensed Assistive Personnel in the early 1990s, a failed effort to cut costs to hospitals.

I served as head of communications at the ANA during a time of great transformation for the profession of nursing and during expansion of ANA's role as a powerful lobbying organization in Washington, DC. ANA was the first major health care organization to endorse the candidacy of presidential candidate Bill Clinton. As a subsequent close ally of the White House and Hillary Rodham Clinton, the ANA lobbied aggressively for the passage of her Health Care Reform agenda. The ANA successfully carved out an expanded role for nurses, particularly advance practice nurses during this time period. As head of communications, I supervised public policy communications and messaging, media relations, public relations campaigns, publications, crisis communications, grass roots communications, and played a key role in public policy strategy and formation. I worked closely with the White House and its other health care allies in Congress.

Director of public affairs at the American Psychological Association. Supervised a department of one dozen media relations and public relations professionals who were responsible for generating in excess of 3,500 plus news stories annually. Responsibilities included liaison with dozens of professional organizations and members of Congress to advance the professional practice of psychology. The duties of the position also included brand identity creation and management, coalition management, creation of high profile media events and press conferences, communications and collateral materials, and crisis management. This position interfaced directly with the offices of Congress, the U.S. Senate, and Cabinet members who were involved in issues of importance to America's psychologists.
