I filled a temporary staffing shortage in the Research Office at Scion. Working closely with the Research Office Manager, I supported scientists to prepare and submit funding proposals to a range of New Zealand Government Funding rounds. This involved advising research teams on appropriate funding sources; coaching applicants to clarify ideas and fit them.

Coming back from Maternity Leave I knew I wanted to work part time. I was offered a Team Manager role at Scion, overseeing around 20 staff in two teams - Forest Industry Informatics, and Value Chain Optimisation. Both of these teams were new in their concept and intention so part of the challenge was to help craft the space in the organisation for these.

As a biological control scientist, my key project was successfully completing the host range testing and introduction of a new biological control agent (Cotesia urabae) for a moth pest (Uraba lugens) of eucalyptus trees in New Zealand. I led this project for 5 years, including developing rearing techniques for the parasitoids and non-target hosts.

I worked with Dr Eckehard Brockerhoff studying the effects of native biodiversity on pest management in exotic pine plantations. I studied biodiversity of Carabid beetles and parasitoids, and abundance of a native moth pest Pseudocoremia suavis. During this time I also delved into monarch butterfly overwintering behaviour, supervised teams of summer.
