We are a geological based outreach program that recruits and selects outstanding high school students from challenged and underserved areas - nearly 50 schools, all over SW Texas and inner city Houston. Criteria for eligibility: they must do extremely well in their science and math coursework. This year we had close to 400 applicants. We can choose only 115 new students. After a very rigorous selection process, students are then notified they have been chosen. With a four year commitment from the students, 9th-12th grades, four summers and through the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, we are able take these wonderful young folk on spectacular field trips all across the nation. We expose them to the outdoor classroom, we introduce them to the world of geology and start them thinking about educational, and professional opportunities in the STEM fields. Our team is responsible for every step of this process and also provides all the logistics involved in planning and supervising 17, week-long trips each summer for: 44 students, 6 counselors, a University Instructor, a high school Educational Coach and 2-3 Industry Sponsors. We travel to Florida, Arizona, Oregon, New Mexico, the Rockies & Washington D.C. just to name a few of our destinations. It is through the Jackson School, Industry Partners and individual donors that our program flourishes and can be offered at no expense to the families of our students. Through partnership with the University of Texas and the University of Alaska Fairbanks, GeoFORCE now exists and offers opportunities to the students of the North Slope. Expansion of the program is happening in the Caribbean, Austin as well as other metropolitan areas of Texas and beyond. Show less

I started out writing specifically in regards to the history and renaissance of Flagstaff's notorious Southside - An Historic Red-light District- where my businesses were located. It became a monthly column featuring Southside and Downtown businesses. Even though I had my own style of writing,(I like to coin it-as savvy Latina, home-girl flair), the articles undoubtedly doubled as tremendous tools for public relations/marketing/advertising copy. Their testimony to increased business after the articles were released was always a substantial percentage (No less than a 40% increase!). This was even more rewarding for me due to the fact that for years I was part of the Mom and Pop, local business landscape. Word of mouth is crucial, however writing an informative, yet soulful local story about one of "Flagstaff's own" in a very popular publication was priceless! I enjoy serving as the mouthpiece for small business, and advocating for them is extremely satisfying. The pen IS mightier than the sword. Show less
