Everyone knew that they were part of a process; that their work impacted others; and if they fell behind, they forced others to do so as well. As a result, Lisa would often set aside a weekend to edit some chapters only to find out at short notice that we needed her to put in several late weeknights instead. Lisa put in hundreds more hours than we originally asked for and stuck with the project for months after her internship officially ended. Her grace, understanding, and matter-of-fact manner in order to get work done is extremely refreshing. But what makes Lisa remarkable are her qualities that fall outside the role of a copy editor. She has a way of instilling confidence and accountability in those she works with. She helps others see the possibility of a final product, even when that product is barely beyond its conception stage. She doesn’t do so through prodding or pep talks; she does so through example. Hearing the explanation of the product, she understands it, repeats it, and produces it. If writing is lacking, she revises it into something its contributors are proud to have helped write.
