After earning my master's degree in English, I made the difficult choice to transition out of the classroom and pursue freelancing. I began FireCopy to provide copywriting and editing services to small businesses, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs. I helped small nonprofits develop their vision and standards, served as an editor for self-published authors, created and managed social media content, and more. I began FireCopy to provide copywriting and editing services to small businesses, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs. I helped small nonprofits develop their vision and standards, served as an editor for self-published authors, created and managed social media content, and more. All of these projects helped me understand how amazingly transferrable my skills as a former teacher and English scholar are. As I worked with such a variety of clients, I still harbored a passion for an issue in English education that is close to my heart as a black woman: the lack of diversity in the traditional curriculum. In 2021, I began to transition FireCopy into a provider of education-based services. My mission is to propel literature, language, and history curricula for grades 9-12 towards representing many more of the people and places that exist within those disciplines. Show less

Having been classified as gifted as a child myself, I became concerned with the academic opportunities provided to the gifted population at the school in which I worked. I applied for and was selected to oversee the education plans of gifted students and to provide resources to teachers of these students. In this semi-administrative role, I wrote curricula for, organized, and facilitated multiple professional development courses for teachers of gifted students.

I began my professional career teaching language arts to seventh-graders. This work opened my eyes to numerous realities about the education system, adolescent psychology, and who I wanted to be as a professional. The student population here was extremely diverse in the areas of culture, household income, and academic ability. Such variables thrilled and challenged me to strengthen the key professional skills of flexibility, meticulousness, and differentiation.
