Lisa Owens is the Executive Director of the Hyams Foundation, which supports Massachusetts based racial justice organizing groups working to build power and transform systems. She organizes funders to make consistent, meaningful investments in building movement infrastructure and in providing multi-year general operating support to grassroots organizing groups and coalitions. Lisa brings over 30 years of experience building grassroots organizations. She began organizing in the mid 1980s as a young person in the Roxbury based community organization, Free My People, which fought against systemic racism in the police department and in the schools and stood in solidarity with the South African people's liberation movement. Since then, she has maintained her commitment to Black liberation and grassroots power building in communities of color. She previously served as the Executive Director of City Life/Vida Urbana, a prominent housing justice group that organizes communities against displacement and builds collective power for systemic change. A movement builder and popular educator, Lisa has taught courses on community organizing and nonprofit management to frontline human service workers in Boston area universities. She actively supports MA based anti-displacement, climate justice and solidarity economy movements and currently serves on the boards of Boston Ujima Project and Boston Impact Initiative.
