I may never have known that humans made live captions until I found myself behind a microphone. Respeaking is a form of verbal transcription, adding details like punctuation and colours, which transmits as captions. Every day I trained my Dragon speech-to-text software with macros and pronunciation cues to learn my style of speech. 2020 was mine and many others' jump into full-time work from home. I was Red Bee Australia's guinea pig in training entirely remotely, and I loved it. Trust in my independence, learning from the decades-long experience of colleagues and the pride we had in our service were features of work I quickly valued. Our captions for broadcasters like the ABC, BBC, SBS and the Department of Parliamentary Services were essential to the public, relaying new and critical information every single day. As remote work turned permanent, it became clearer that we needed to create our own water cooler moments. I led our Engagement Team with monthly newsletter contributions highlighting staff creativity and interests. And as a mental health first aider, colleagues were aware that I could be a point of first contact for mental health support.Highlights of my time included:- Demoing for the Australian Communications and Media Authority- Witnessing historic moments like the farewell of Queen Elizabeth II and Australia's co-host of the FIFA Women's World Cup (go Tillies!)- Meeting my colleagues in person for the first time!
