In my circle of friends and colleagues, I’m known as the interviewer. I love to ask other people questions, and this information-seeking nature helps me offer great customer service, write compelling marketing copy, and learn new skills quickly. One project that tested all of those capabilities was when I implemented a new CRM at Austin Bat Refuge.I began the search by reviewing many nonprofit CRMs, starting free trial after free trial and watching demos. After seeing what was out there, I wrote up some requirements based on conversations with the refuge’s co-founders and on the needs I saw we had. We ended up going with Salesforce NPSP, which had to be significantly customized at the beginning. I created custom objects, changed field names, and figured out how to automate as many donation imports as possible.This project reinforced my belief in not letting perfect be the enemy of good. I could have spent weeks of full-time work on the project, continuing to tinker until I got every automation right, but the effort I would have spent on that wasn’t worth the reward. I was the organization’s technology expert when it came to Salesforce, so I wrote up step-by-step instructions and explained the basic data structure of Salesforce for a non-technical audience. I’m proud of what I accomplished on this project—it was a true test of my hard and soft skills.Outside of work, I like to tackle home improvement projects, like recaulking and regrouting our shower, and do crafts, like constructing a pet cemetery for Halloween. I also enjoy taking my dogs to agility and obedience classes.
