I love people and believe passionately in positive psychology and the power of kindness! Following a 15-year, legal publishing career, I became a secondary English teacher in 2004... and loved it. As well as honing my own skills, I mentored/ supported trainees and NQTs.Recently, however, I have become increasingly concerned with teacher/ student mental health and well-being, and, several years ago, left teaching full-time, to found Teach Positive, supporting school staff, young people and parents around mental health issues, and teaching coping strategies and resilience - in group training situations and as a one-to-one coach. I am a Mental Health England First Aid Trainer, Level 2 Coach, Level 2 Counsellor, and Teach Well Schools Wellbeing Lead - and I support individuals, schools, clubs and societies in these areas. I am also a Raising Attainment with Wellbeing Coach and I have a Masters in Education: Coaching and Mentoring (winning the Peter Pumfrey award for academic achievement for my dissertation on coaching to support teacher wellbeing and prevent burnout). In 2021-22, I spent a year as Advisory Teacher of English on the beautiful island of St Helena, and I have also worked in a school for teenagers with high-functioning autism, leading their English Department - and rewriting their English curriculum. I was especially proud when my work on 'teaching empathy through English' gained specific recognition in the school's inspection - with the school gaining a 'Good', from unsatisfactory.Whilst Head of Wellbeing/Professional Tutor at Akeley Wood School, I trained as an educational coach, setting up staff and student peer coaching programmes and promoting wellbeing, growth mindset and resilience across the school - including a series of Life Lectures for parents. The project was awarded Silver Coachmark status. I also ran a school debate team, and trained groups of sixth formers to pass English Speaking Board Advanced Spoken English exams, using public speaking to build their self-esteem. In 2013, I set up a sixth form project, collaborating with a charitable organisation in Sri Lanka, which raised over £150,000 to fund sustainable aid projects in tsunami-damaged Galle. As well as team building, fundraising and volunteering, over 100 students subsequently travelled to Sri Lanka, to experience a developing culture, working with local people - and growing irrevocably as a result. From 2018-21, I volunteered as school outreach for the charity Kicking Off - and work with a number of charities and NGOs supporting refugees in the UK and abroad.
