Lisel Petis is a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform and a dedicated champion for women’s leadership. As a policy expert with a nonpartisan think tank, she focuses on advancing equity, reducing recidivism, and upholding individual liberties through thoughtful, data-driven reforms. Lisel also strives to empower women to lead and succeed.Lisel’s commitment to justice is highlighted through her time as executive director of Better Tomorrow, where she led a dedicated team with one clear mission: to support domestic and sexual violence survivors and stop the violence before it begins. She played a key role in establishing the first Child Advocacy Center in her community—a transformative step in ensuring every child had a voice and a chance for justice. During this period, she also collaborated with statewide coalitions and local organizations to shape policies that better protect and uplift victims.Earlier in her career, Lisel honed her legal expertise in the courtroom, where her persuasive skills helped secure justice in both criminal and civil cases. As a prosecutor, she handled a wide range of cases, from attempted murder, to sexual assault, to drug distribution. In addition to her legal work, Lisel served five years on the Steamboat Springs City Council, where she championed affordable housing, DEI initiatives, and environmental causes.Lisel is fiercely committed to empowering the next generation of female leaders. As co-founder of the Thrive Together Women’s Leadership Summit in Steamboat Springs, she’s watched it grow into a sold-out event six years running. At the most recent summit, she delivered a talk on 'The Art of Persuasion,' giving women the tools to lead with confidence. Beyond the stage, Lisel has mentored both teen girls and women starting their careers. She also served on the ‘Women’s March on Steamboat’ steering committee, amplifying the voices of women in her community.In her current role at her think tank, Lisel uses her expertise to create comprehensive policy studies, write persuasive op-eds, and work closely with policymakers and coalitions to push forward impactful legislation. Her insights and strategic thinking have been requested at various prestigious events, such as the National League of Cities’ Mayoral Convenings on Community Safety and Violence Prevention and the Salzburg Global Seminar’s Whole System Approach to Justice.
