Als Stafadviseur bij Amsterdam Neuroscience - een onderzoeksinstituut van het Amsterdam UMC - werk ik samen met de directie aan beleidsmatige vraagstukken.

Als Stafadviseur Research leid en begeleid ik wetenschappelijk onderzoek in uitvoering en strategie. Ik doe dat samen met het afdelingshoofd van de afdeling Psychiatrie van het Amsterdam UMC, locatie AMC.Binnen de afdeling Psychiatrie ben ik betrokken bij ondersteuning en aansturing van de onderzoekers en verschillende onderzoeksgroepen. Daaronder vallen bijvoorbeeld het begeleiden van promovendi, maar ook subsidie aanvragen, METC aanvragen en jaarlijkse onderzoek rapportages. Afdelingsbreed beleg ik Research Meetings en houd ik overzicht over publicatieprocessen en de AMC wetenschapsregistratie.Aan de genoemde afdeling wordt klinisch, neurobiologisch en genetisch onderzoek verricht om een beter beeld te krijgen van verschillende psychiatrische klachten. In het bijzonder wordt onderzoek gedaan naar dwang, angst, depressie, psychosen en verslaving. Deze onderzoeken hebben als doel om het onderliggende mechanisme van de klachten beter te begrijpen en meer kennis te genereren over de optimale behandeling ervan.

At the department of Biological Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I am involved in management of sample data from the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR). The NTR was founded in 1987 and aims to examine the contribution of hereditary predispositions to personality, growth, development, disease and risk factors for disease. Approximately 87,000 twins and multiples are registered with the NTR, and in total over 175,000 subjects (parents, multiples, siblings, spouses, etc.) are registered. The types of data I work with comprise information on different types of samples (in example originating from blood, buccal or urine) that were collected from NTR participants for multiple projects throughout the past three decades. Primary goal for most of the collected samples is to isolate DNA and genotype NTR participants. For genotyping NTR participants, the department of Biological Psychology collaborates with the Avera Institute for Human Genetics (AIHG) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This institute is specialized in human molecular genetics, and particularly in bio banking and twin research. My share in this international collaboration is to make sure that the sample information is complete and available in an optimal way to both institutes. This includes both samples from already existing parallel databases and currently collected samples. To manage the complex NTR sample database, a sample tracking system is used. In addition to this novel database management system, SPSS is also used frequently for writing and running scripts. The ultimate goal of my current function is to enable both local and international colleagues to share knowledge on the NTR samples and improve availability NTR sample information with respect to privacy regulations.

The Netherlands Brain Bank for Psychiatry (NBB-Psy) is a pioneering brain banking project for psychiatric disorders. NBB-Psy aims to stimulate post mortem research by establishing a resource of brain tissue of several psychiatric disorders. As a research assistent on this unique project, I actively approach people to inform them about brain donation and post mortem research. I developed an expertise in informing people diagnosed with schizophrenia/obsessive compulsive disorder, and especially in giving presentations for patient associations. As part of the inclusion, I hold neuropsychiatric interviews with current donors. Since the initiation of the project in 2013, the amount of donors have increased significantly. There are now ten times more registered NBB-Psy donors than before the initiation of the project.
