Master'S Thesis Research
"Prototypes Elsewhere to be Considered in Planning Density in the Warehouse District in Austin"As many cities around the world face the challenges of balancing an increasing demand for higher density with the preservation of valuable cultural legacy, an inevitable design trend has developed that can add on to the past while still preserving it: the expansion of historic buildings with architectural additions. Instances of topping historic structures with modern towers or wrapping them with modern constructions have provided plenty of extra space and rooms, but these changes have also raised many design issues that characterize the sometimes awkward clash between old and new. This thesis focuses on several prototypes of modern architectural additions to historic buildings around the world, discussing ongoing design issues with respect to massing, which determines density and architectural expression through materials, details, styles, etc. Select prototypes are tested within the context of the Warehouse District in Austin, leading to a further discussion of design issues that must be addressed in conjunction with density planning and historic preservation. The prototype analysis and testing explore how different principles apply to different sites, and provide a view for practitioners of both historic preservation and architecture into the culture of the other, and ultimately propose the choices available for density planning in Austin’s Warehouse District.
