•Developed autonomous landing of a quadrotor UAV on a moving vessel deck. The designed method search and recognize moving landing sign, guide the UAV landing autonomously. A self-designed moving landing pad is used for emulating vessel deck movement.•Developed new approach of on-board sensor only feature based monocular 3--D SLAM algorithm for Small UAVs. The designed method is able to output absolute scaled map and UAV position simultaneously in previously unknown environments.•Developed machine learning models for estimating wind speed profiles using UAV flight data. Learning algorithms used including polynomial regression and K-nearest neighborhood method.•Developed a low-cost quadrotor UAV platform for research.
