About Lizeth Sanchez
Since I was younger, I was curious to understand how and why things work in the way they do. My family taught me that education was the key to acquiring that knowledge. Therefore, I decided to become an engineer. My passion for materials science increased as I grew older, especially during my undergraduate studies in metallurgical engineering, where I was selected to participate in a research program supported by Colciencias (National department of science, technology, and innovation of Colombia). That motivated me to start my graduate studies abroad. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the corrosion engineering field. Working at the National Center for Education and Research on Corrosion and Materials Performance (NCERCAMP) of the University of Akron has been a unique opportunity in my professional career. Throughout my career as a graduate student, I have consolidated my knowledge of corrosion, materials science, electrochemistry, and materials performance. I have gained valuable experience in research project development, project management, design of experiments, and corrosion experimentation. I have used characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD, topographical IFM, and optical microscopy along with analysis of data using Origin, Excel spreadsheet, ImageJ software, among others. My current research is focused on the study of environmentally induced cracking of pipeline steels under the influence of alternating current and cathodic protection. A significant problem encountered mainly in the O&G industry that threatens the safety and integrity of the structure. This project has been sponsored by PHMSA-DOT in collaboration with Marathon Petroleum Corporation and Mers integrity and has been presented at different conferences and symposiums wining several highly competitive awards. Graduate Research And Teaching Assistant
- Evaluated the susceptibility to environmental cracking of the low carbon steel under the cathodic protection and AC interference, using electrochemical and mechanical tests.
- Study the fracture morphology associated with cathodic protection under AC corrosion using SEM, EDS, 3D-profilometer, metallographic analyses.
- Provided support in the courses Fundamentals of Aqueous Corrosion and Aqueous corrosion prevention performing grading assignments, and supervision of +20 students on average each semester.
