Biota integrates DNA sequencing and data science to gain unprecedented subsurface insight used to optimize oil and gas development and production. Estimates indicate that up to 94% of Earth’s microbes reside in the deep subsurface (Whitman et al 1998). At Biota we harness the power of these microbes by sequencing their DNA to gain direct geological insight into the subsurface.DNA signatures vary vertically, laterally, and temporally. They are driven by variation in reservoir chemistry, geology, depositional history, and fracture networks, and provide a previously untapped source of geological and reservoir insight.

Gulf of Mexico Production • Developed workflow for using azimuthal stack gathers to aid in sub-salt illumination, influencing understanding of reservoir architecture while de-risking drilling hazards. Guyana Exploration • Analyzed mass transport complexes through seismic mapping and well data to provide input to petroleum systems modeling, shallow hazards work, and increased understanding of basin subsidence. • Integrated regional seismic observations, interdisciplinary technical literature, and well data to better understand hinterland drainage leading to better informed prospect risking. • Completed a sub-regional sequence stratigraphic fairway analysis outlining depositional inputs to the system. Created depositional models used to guide prospect maturation and block exploration. Bakken/North Dakota Subsurface • Designed an experimental program combining biological and chemical analysis with production data to mitigate clogged flow lines resulting from interaction of microbial growth and chemical precipitation. • Created and oversaw a project investigating feasibility of using handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) on drill cuttings to optimize geosteering. Developed and optimized workflow for sample collection and analysis.• Developed a sequence stratigraphic framework for the Ordovician Red River B formation based on core analysis, thin sections, and well log correlations in order to determine “sweet spots” for future exploitation. • Pioneered the use of coupling handheld XRF on core with detailed sequence stratigraphic work for better sub-regional characterization of unconventional reservoirs.• Developed and executed an interdisciplinary investigation of the role of geology and wellbore geometry on completions defects and low productions. Outcomes guided geosteering practices resulting in increased confidence in well design. • Worked as the primary Ops Geologist to geosteer 5 wells averaging 99% in geologic window.
