In his classic book “On Writing Well,” William Zinsser has the answer: “You are writing for yourself. * I believe with Zinsser that a key to writing well is to follow your interests and see where they take you. That's why I write on the following subjects:FIVE SUBJECTS I'M WRITING ABOUT- Self-discovery through formal career assessments and other forms of self-analysis. For example, I’m a great fan of CliftonStrengths and enjoy digging deep on that subject. - The challenge of finding a role and niche in the writing world. This has been a lifelong challenge for me, and I love to write about any insights I gain in this area.- The practice of writing. Establishing some kind of writing practice, while challenging, is also essential. I enjoy writing about all aspects of this, including the tools I use. - The thrill of continuous learning. There’s nothing more exciting than finding training that gives me new insights, especially when it helps me advance my career as a writer.- The effects of AI on writing, especially as it relates to independent thinking and authenticity. How can we make use of AI and retain our integrity as original thinkers? If any of these subjects interests you, I’d love to connect. I’m also looking to reenter the field of editing (nonfiction) and am considering my options there as I take my next steps.*As anyone who has read “On Writing Well” knows, Zinsser is a master of the writing craft, which includes writing for your audience. But he also insists that writers must remain true to themselves: "Readers want the person who is talking to them to sound genuine. Therefore a fundamental rule is: be yourself.”
